Luckily, Kilmartin Castle was overlooked and left roofless for 200 years. It was the perfect building to create the genuine Scottish castle experience we had been looking for as travellers.

An eclectic mix of antique furnishings, well-considered new and old reclaimed materials, as well as original art pieces, create a very authentic, yet soft and welcoming castle interior.

Kilmartin Castle was originally built in 1550 for John Carswell, then Rector of Kilmartin Glen, and later Bishop of The Isles, held as a Campbell Clan stronghold outpost after this. It stood abandoned for nearly 200 years, Now it’s a cozy retreat from the modern world ideal for romantic getaways, families, and friends to relax and experience the history of the surrounding landscape.

When we saw Kilmartin Castle for sale, it had been a ruin for 200 years and was in an incredibly original state. Typically, the Victorians would make the windows larger and add ugly extensions to buildings like this one. Luckily, Kilmartin Castle was overlooked and left roofless for 200 years.

The hosts run an occasional pop-up dining event with local chefs .

Kilmartin Castle is now restored! We have held on tight to the rustic character of this 16th century castle, whilst adding luxury wherever possible, with underfloor heating, walk-in rain showers and big copper tubs. This is not just any holiday home.

Kilmartin Castle is the ideal stop for cyclists on ‘ The Caledonian Way ’ – National Route 78 of the National Cycle Network passes through the village. Kilmartin Castle will be open as a luxury bed and breakfast throughout 2021 and can also be booked exclusively for small elopements, family holidays or special occasions.

Kilmartin Castle sits over Kilmartin Glen, an area full of incredible history dating back to the neolithic period, many standing stones are dotted around the landscape. The local pub is walking distance from the castle and a good choice for a pub dinner out. Locals travel here from surrounding villages.

Kilmartin Castle sits at the top of Kilmartin Glen, which boasts the largest number of historical finds within a six mile radius in all of Scotland. Amazing walks start right from the castle front door. Kilmartin Village has great facilities too, an award winning museum / café and gift shop and a local pub serving dinner, only a 3 minute walk.

So, when Kilmartin Castle went up for sale, a few weeks after our holiday ended, we couldn't resist starting a new adventure. We sold all our worldly possessions and bought it.
